Pre-Op Letter

Welcome to Mountain View Hospital Surgical Services, it is our pleasure to serve you.  No matter how long you stay or what type of surgery you receive you can be certain that you’ll receive the best medical attention possible.

Here are some instructions that will help you thru the surgery experience:

  1. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night prior to your surgery.  This includes solid food, gum, candy, liquids, and dairy products of any kind.  It is very important for the patient to have any empty stomach when they arrive for surgery.  Except for the approved medication instructions that were given to you by your pre-operative nurse.
  2. Take and shower or bath either the night before or the morning of your surgery.  Brush your teeth being careful not to swallow any liquid. Wear loose fitting clothing that will be easy to remove and will fit over any bandages or splints.  Use make – up and hair products sparingly. Lotions and deodorants should not be applied to any area near the surgery site.  Leave all jewelry at home this includes all earring and body piercings of any kind. Remove contact lenses prior to surgery you may bring your eyeglasses if needed to read and sign any forms
  3.  Please plan to have someone you know drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours after your surgery.
  4. We will call you the day before your surgery to discuss the time of surgery and your medical history.
  5. If you have any serious medical problems or have recently developed a cold, fever, sore throat or any other condition that you believe might affect your readiness for surgery please tell us during your phone interview.
  6. You will be asked to review and sign a consent form prior to surgery.  A parent or legal guardian must be available to sign for patients under the age of 18.
  7. Bring your driver’s license or picture ID, insurance cards. Co-pays and deductibles if needed.  You will be required to make a payment on the day of your surgery if your insurance does not cover your surgery in full.
  8. Please limit only one adult visitor per patient and one or both parents for children under 18.  Please do not bring small children if possible.

When your child needs Surgery – help prepare your child for a positive experience by doing the following:

  1. Talk with him or her in a straightforward relaxed manner.
  2. Don’t mention unpleasant experiences like needles or pain.

 Techniques to help your child feel more comfortable:

  1. Bring a favorite toy object or blanket to comfort them
  2. Be prepared with their bottle or sippy cup for afterwards
  3. Be sure to adhere to the dietary restrictions and instructions given to you by the nurse or doctor.
